“The power under the constitution will always be in the people. It is entrusted for certain defined purposes, and for a certain limited period, to representatives of their own choosing; and whenever it is executed contrary to their interest, or not agreeable to their wishes, their servants can and undoubtedly will, be recalled.”

February meeting!

Good Afternoon,
The 2012 election is critical!
We must elect officials at local, state and federal levels of government who are fiscally responsible, truly believe in constitutionally limited government and firmly support free enterprise.
  • The Obama administration spends nearly $20,000 per minute
  • America's debt exceeds 100% of GDP
  • The value of the dollar has decreased 21% in the past 21 months!
  • 15.6% workers unemployed or underemployed
Attend our tea party meeting, Tuesday February 14th, to learn about the March 3rd caucus and our plans for the 2012 election.

Learn about the caucus process and how your involvement can make a real difference. We simply cannot afford to sit on the sidelines this year.

Become involved, informed and part of the solution!

"Science" sez stupidity, conservative beliefs, and prejudice are linked

I wouldn't consider this "science" as being settled:
Low IQ & Conservative Beliefs Linked to Prejudice
These paragraphs appear to drive the headline:
There's no gentle way to put it: People who give in to racism and prejudice may simply be dumb, according to a new study that is bound to stir public controversy.

.... [snip] .....

Polling data and social and political science research do show that prejudice is more common in those who hold right-wing ideals that those of other political persuasions, Nosek told LiveScience.

.... [snip] .....

As suspected, low intelligence in childhood corresponded with racism in adulthood. But the factor that explained the relationship between these two variables was political: When researchers included social conservatism in the analysis, those ideologies accounted for much of the link between brains and bias.
The lead researcher does note that this is a "study of averages":
Hodson was quick to note that the despite the link found between low intelligence and social conservatism, the researchers aren't implying that all liberals are brilliant and all conservatives stupid. The research is a study of averages over large groups, he said.

"There are multiple examples of very bright conservatives and not-so-bright liberals, and many examples of very principled conservatives and very intolerant liberals," Hodson said.
How kind of him.  And how .... unbiased .... of the media to use such a thoughtful headline.

Me, I'm reminded of the old rule of thumb:  "There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies and statistics."

A Review of a recent PBS "News" Hour broadcast...

...on the U.S. Manufacturing Jobs Controversy.   Which is to say, PBS was anything but "spot on".  Not even close.  And they even get some gratuitous conservative bashing in at the same time.  The review highlights a lot of reasons why taxpayers shouldn't be funding PBS.

Washington State Legislature Considers Porkulus Clone

Remember the original Federal stimulus, a/k/a "The American Reinvestment and Recovery Act"?  That didn't go very well.  It was supposed to:
  • Create new jobs and save existing ones
  • Spur economic activity and invest in long-term growth
  • Foster unprecedented levels of accountability and transparency in government spending

Anyone see these goals met?  I sure haven't.  Last time I looked we still have high unemployment in the midst of a major recession. And that's my concern as our state legislature is considering a smaller version of the Federal Porkulus
Washington eyes $1B stimulus plan to aid construction

OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) — A $1 billion stimulus plan that Washington lawmakers are now considering seeks to create construction jobs by funding a variety of infrastructure projects around the state, officials said Wednesday.

Democratic Rep. Hans Dunshee said there is a sense of urgency because of high unemployment in the construction industry. A plan he released Wednesday includes funding for projects in schools, state parks and environmental management.
Sound familiar?  And probably equally doomed to failure.   Yes, it'll put a few dollars into the pockets of people who need to feed their families.  No argument.  But it won't "strengthen the economy", as one labor representative stated.  It's just a variation of unemployment, the extension of a familiar entitlement that will end when the contracts are complete.

Taxes spent on government contracts are not "investment", it's corporate welfare.  Which, in theory, liberals oppose.

I recommend that you contact your state representatives (you can find their contact information, or send an e-mail, here), and urge them to vote this down.  We can't afford our very own Porkulus.

President Proposes Federal Controls on College Tuition

Well, Obama didn't say THAT, of course.  What he said was:
College tuition costs: Hold 'em down or else, Obama says
"I'm telling Congress we should steer federal campus-based aid to those colleges that keep tuition affordable, provide good value, serve their students well," Obama said. "We are putting colleges on notice _ you can't keep _ you can't assume that you'll just jack up tuition every single year. ... We should push colleges to do better. "
In my opinion, this is tantamount to Federal price controls, and an extension  of Federal authorities into the authorities of the States.  In short, yet more Federal overreach, of which we have too much already.

You can read the full article at the Christian Science Monitor (registration is not required, but you have to answer a question or "Like" it for Facebook), but here's the closing paragraph:
"I have a lot of student loans, and I would have like to hear more about where he's going to get the money for these programs," said Weber. "It's pretty scary, but the university here does a pretty good job of offering grants and aid. This might end up being more of a financial burden on all students."
It's good to know that some (if not many) young people are thinking for themselves.

Waiting for the headlines......

You may be familiar with Sheriff Joe Arpaio, of Maricopa County, Arizona.  He's an outspoken critic of the liberal policies that have brought a lot of problems to our country, and a firm believer in law and order.  Sheriff Arpaio has gone toe-to-toe with Federal agencies and liberal figures before.

And, whether or not you are a "Birther", this death threat against Sheriff Arpaio and his family (link is to a PDF file) by a supporter of President Obama is disturbing.A legal investigation, at no expense to the taxpayers, should not result in such vile threats.

And while it's still early (the press release only came out yesterday), a similar threat made against any Democrat in office would be headline news by the major media outlets.  So, I'm waiting to see if that happens.  If it does.  Which I doubt, given the bias by the media in favor of the Obama Administration.

Expect updates if I'm wrong.

Thanks to GWR for the link to the press release.

President Obama's Arizona Reception.....

....started with a personal chat on the tarmac between himself and Governor Jan Brewer....

(Governor Brewer provides personal commentary on this example of bipartisanship here.)

.....followed by a warm welcome from citizens of the Great State of Arizona.

By the way, President Obama provided at least one economic boost to Arizona as a result of his visit: the sales of Governor Brewer's book, Scorpions For Breakfast, clearly got a major boost in sales.

11 stunning revelations from Larry Summers’s secret economics memo to Barack Obama
A lengthy piece in The New Yorker looks at policymaking in the Obama White House. A key source for writer Ryan Lizza is a 57-page, “Sensitive & Confidential” memo written by economist Larry Summers—eventually to be head of Obama’s National Economic Council—to Obama in December 2008. Here’s some of what I learned about Team Obama’s thinking as the financial crisis was exploding, followed by quotes from the memo itself...

This is great, but "great" is a relative term

This is an amazing display of ingenuity and original thinking, but it also highlights how much of the world lives like this on a day-to-day basis. Americans are extremely fortunate in nearly all regards; let's not throw it away by voting ourselves back into the stone age, hmmmmm?

A new use for discarded plastic bottles

Is this an indicator of how the Democrats will run their 2012 campaigns?

Dirty tricks in Iowa involving former Obama 2008 staffer?
It’s difficult to know whether to tell this story in straight or reverse chronology, but either way, it raises eyebrows about the tactics that Iowa Democrats will deploy in 2012.  Let’s take this in reverse.  The story starts with an arrest yesterday in Des Moines of Zach Edwards, who works at Link Strategies as its Director of New Media, for identity theft targeting the Iowa Secretary of State, Republican Matt Schulz...
This is not a smoking gun.  But it is a point to keep in mind.

Raising taxes does not impress creditors

Illinois gets downgraded by Moody’s
Say, remember when the state of Illinois took the Democratic approach to fixing their budget woes by raising taxes?  The debt problems of the Land of Lincoln would disappear, Governor Pat Quinn argued, if the state hiked corporate and personal income tax rates by as much as two-thirds.  The extra revenue would stabilize the state’s fiscal footing and pull them from the brink of financial disaster.

How well did that work out?  As the Wall Street Journal reports today, Illinois debt has now been downgraded to the lowest rating of all 50 states by Moody’s...
Maybe Governor Gregoire and the Democratic controlled State legislature can learn something from this.

But I doubt it.

UPDATE:  oh, my.......Connecticut is downgraded as well.

Justice Department official takes the Fifth on "Fast & Furious"

From Hot Air:  "DoJ figure taking the 5th in Fast & Furious probe".

The closing sentence is the starkest:
"One point is pretty clear, though.  Officials at the DoJ involved in this operation are fearing criminal prosecution, which means that this scandal just went prime time."
It's past time to clean house in Washington, D.C.

This Would Be Funny If It Weren’t So Serious

So says Bruce McQuain at The Conservative Commune.  And he's right:

"~A federal grant for $765,828 went to—I am not making this up, as Dave Barry would say—bring an International House of Pancakes franchise to Washington, D.C.

Because bringing IHOPs to D.C. is a primary function of the United States government, and worthy of every dollar spent."
Our tax dollars at work, folks. We definitely in it for the long haul.

'Reasonable Profits Board'

The Democrats are taking their coats off, and exposing themselves for the socialists that they are:
Six House Democrats, led by Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio), want to set up a "Reasonable Profits Board" to control gas profits.

The Democrats, worried about higher gas prices, want to set up a board that would apply a "windfall profit tax" as high as 100 percent on the sale of oil and gas, according to their legislation. The bill provides no specific guidance for how the board would determine what constitutes a reasonable profit.

The Gas Price Spike Act, H.R. 3784, would apply a windfall tax on the sale of oil and gas that ranges from 50 percent to 100 percent on all surplus earnings exceeding "a reasonable profit." It would set up a Reasonable Profits Board made up of three presidential nominees that will serve three-year terms. Unlike other bills setting up advisory boards, the Reasonable Profits Board would not be made up of any nominees from Congress.
Whenever someone says, "Your profits are unreasonable", what they really mean is, "I want a cut".

Isn't this racism?

Seriously.  TEA Partiers are called racist because we don't support President Obama.  How is this any different?

Internet sites on their SOPA-Strike may be conducting a blackout but Hollywood studios are conducting a boycott. Hollywood Obama DonorsI’ve learned that Hollywood studio chiefs individually and as a group are drawing a line in the sand on the piracy issue with the Obama re-election campaign and refusing to give any more donations.  The blowup came after President Obama on Saturday dashed moguls’ hopes that he would remain on the sidelines in the dispute over the U.S. House Of Representatives’ Stop Online Piracy Act and the U.S. Senate’s Protect IP Act.
Read the whole thing (there is some profane language) -- I especially like the part where a mogul is quoted saying "And, at its heart institutionally, Hollywood supports the Democrats." As if that wasn't already painfully clear.

"Has this cycle been a Tea Party failure?"

A good, thoughtful article from Hot Air about where the TEA Party has been, where it is, and where we are going.

Short version: No.  It's the long haul that counts, folks.

EPA Procedures fail to impress Supreme Court

If you want a prime example of Federal over-reach, look no further than the US EPA, which puts landowners into a position of not using their land. or face severe penalties if they do.....without any recourse, including the judicial systemEd Morrissey writes about a couple in Idaho who couldn't sue the EPA, until the EPA sued them.  It's an extension of Agenda 21.

This is happening in the United States of America. Today. For real.

"The Higher Opportunity Promise for Education Act."

From WashingtonVotes.org:
2012 House Bill 2486: Concerning tax reform and creating an individual income tax
Introduced by Rep. Chris Reykdal, (D - Olympia) (D) on January 16, 2012, modifies many definitions in current tax law and creates a personal income tax of 1% for individuals, estates, and trusts, beginning January 1, 2015. This act requires voter approval and will be cited as the Higher Opportunity Promise for Education Act.
Referred to the House Ways & Means Committee on January 16, 2012.
Keep your eyes on this one, folks.  The Democrats, they keep on trying to have a state income tax.

The Obama Phone

Got this in the e-mail today:

Now I know why we have all those extra tax charges on our cell phone.

The Obama Phone -

Just when you think you've heard it all, our illustrious Congress quietly comes up with a new zinger to put their hands in your pockets, and pick them while you aren't watching. Isn't this just wonderful ?

I was standing in line at the checkout counter at Wal Mart and as I looked at the line behind me, I saw a couple of people talking about what looked like identical new cell phones, bragging about the fact that their phones were free and so was the airtime.

The woman in line behind me had heard the same exchange and turned to the young man behind her and asked, 'Is that a new type of cell phone?' The young man replied, 'Yes, this is my new Obama phone. She asked him what an Obama phone was, and he went on to say that, 'Welfare recipients are now eligible to receive what he described as (1) a FREE new cell phone, and (2) approximately 250 FREE minutes of air time every month.'

Needless to say, I was a little skeptical about his answer, so when I got back home, I Googled it, and lo and behold, he was telling the truth. This was what I discovered:

SafeLink Wireless is a government supported program that provides a free cell phone and airtime each month for income-eligible customers. In other words, your tax dollars are being distributed to a wireless phone provider to provide welfare recipients with free cell phones and airtime. I don't know about you, but as for me, enough is enough. We are $14 Trillion in debt, Congress is balking at continuing unemployment payments to those who want to work, and Congress is increasing the dole-out to dead beats.

The ship of State is sinking, and it's sinking fast. The old concept of getting ahead through hard work has flown out the window. It has been replaced by Obama's and Congress' idea of Hope and Change. The country has changed all right, changed to "Why should I work for it, when I can get it for free?"

You can click on the link below to confirm for yourself that the Obama Phone is real.
FYI. Did a quick lookup of Safelink on Wikipedia and also found that in 1999 Mexican TelMex paid $57.5 million for a 55 percent controlling interest in the parent company. As of May 2011 has almost 4,000,000 subscribers. Safelink funded by Universal Service Fund (USF that we all pay as part of cell and landline bill) which was started in 1996. Not sure when free cell phones through Safelink for low income was started...
No wonder we are going broke.

"Here it comes again", Part II

But this is in a GOOD way.  Behold, Senator Marco Rubio's awesome letter to Barack Obama, of which I quote but one sentence:

"America deserves leaders who will stand front and center, level with the American people about our challenges and offer real solutions to solve them."

Allen West, member of Congress, speaks on the National Defense Authorization Act of 2012:

The problem with Congressional legislation is that they are written by committees of lawyers who negotiate a compromise on every page.  I'm not sure that there's an immediate solution to that, but it's compelling that Mr. West, a genuine conservative who was on the committee, notes that there is no authorization for the military to detain American citizens, as has been rumored for a while.

Here it comes again.

[Sen./Rep.] [First] [Last]
Washington, DC

RE: REJECT Obama's Debt Ceiling Hike Request!

Dear [Sen./Rep.] [Last]:

I'm writing to inform you that it is my wish, as your constituent, for you to vote to REJECT President Obama's latest request to raise the U.S. debt ceiling limit by $1.2 TRILLION.

When Congress passed the debt ceiling deal last summer -- AGAINST the wishes of the American People -- we were promised that it would stave off a credit rating downgrade, and begin reducing the federal deficit in the future. NEITHER of those things were true; and now, the President is asking for ANOTHER debt ceiling hike, which will raise it from $15.2 trillion to $16.4 TRILLION -- and it won't even be enough to get us through the end of 2012!

This is INSANE. We do NOT need or want another debt hike – it is way past time to CUT SPENDING and REDUCE THE DEBT. Again, is it my wish, as your constituent, for you to vote to REJECT President Obama's latest request to raise the U.S. debt ceiling limit by $1.2 TRILLION.

Sincerely,

A "Litany of Failure"

From Doug Ross:
How many failures will it take before a huge majority of Americans discover what the Soviets, the East Germans, the Cubans, the North Koreans and all others who lived in centrally planned economies found out? That is: that authoritarian, centralized, massive government planning can't work, won't work and hasn't ever worked in all of human history.
And here's the list.

It's Déjà vu all over again

Harry doesn't heart Obama any more

Such crushing disappointment for a hardcore socialist like Harry Belafonte.  My heart goes out to the poor man.

NOT.

But the news is good and bad.  As Tina Korbe put it:
At least celebrity criticisms of Obama have some grounding in fact; the president has performed poorly, as the economy reminds us daily. Then again, it’s still troubling that these criticisms come because Damon and Belafonte think Obama hasn’t been progressive enough. It seems, for them, nothing but “full socialist” will do.

House increases debt by $1 trillion in 10 months

As Tina Korbe at Hot Air says:

Good going, GOP House: Thanks for increasing the debt by $1 trillion in 10 months

I don't place the blame squarely on the House GOP. But they need to address this issue up front, and now. That they really haven't done.

February meeting date

The next meeting is on 13 February, at the Regional Airport Conference Room.  The business meeting starts at 6:30 PM, and the regular meeting starts at 7:00 PM.

All meetings are on the second Tuesday of the month.  Come in, and bring your friends!

January Meeting

Tonight's meeting was well attended.  The topics presented were:
  • State activities.  There will be no primary in Washington, we use a caucus system.  The dates are: 3 March for the County Caucus at the WaHi Commons; and the County Convention on 21 April.  The State and National Conventions are later in the year.  You need not be a registered Republican to attend; you are merely required to sign an affidavit that you will not attend any other caucuses.  Dan will provide his "Caucuses For Dummies" next month.
  • A hand out from the Family Policy Institute of Washington concerning bills to watch during the 2012 session of the State Legislature was passed around.
  • The elections this year were discussed extensively.  The biggest points of interest are getting out the vote and distributing voter information.  This means knocking on doors, handing out pamphlets, making phone calls, and so on.  This will ramp up as we get closer to the elections.  If you are interested, please consider volunteering.  Please send a message through our contact page, specifying "Get Out The Vote", and your message will be passed to the right person.
  • Getting training on how to handle this campaign season, individually, and as a group, from the National Tea Party was also discussed.  Some people were interested, but we need to survey the entire group.  The cost will be around $25 per person, and will likely last all day.  We hope to conduct the training in Walla Walla, but we may share with the Tri-Cities group, depending on how things fall out.  Please sign up by going to our contact page, and sending a message titled "National Tea Party Training".  If enough people sign up, we'll have it.
  • The upcoming tax votes were discussed.  There are several: a levy for schools in the county (the school district has a site for that here); a 0.2% sales tax increase for roads in the city; and of course, Governor Gregoire's proposed sales tax.  The primary concern is that tax increases in the midst of the worst recession since the Great Depression is not supportive of economic growth.  All of these taxes seem small, but they add up, especially to people who are cutting their budgets to make ends meet.
  • Finally, the new web site was presented to the group, and several people signed up to post information and links to resources.  We still need some moderators, and help with this blog would be great as well.

Lieutenant General Kelly, USMC, Veterans Day 2011 Speech

LTG John F. Kelly, US Marine Corps, gave a speech earlier this year that I commend to you.  In part, it says:

…As we sit here right now, we should not lose sight of the fact that America is at risk in a way it has never been before. Our enemy fights for an ideology based on an irrational hatred of who we are. Make no mistake about that no matter what certain elements of the “chattering class” relentlessly churn out. We did not start this fight, and it will not end until the extremists understand that we as a people will never lose our faith or our courage. If they persist, these terrorists and extremists and the nations that provide them sanctuary, they must know they will continue to be tracked down and captured or killed. America’s civilian and military protectors both here at home and overseas have for nearly nine years fought this enemy to a standstill and have never for a second “wondered why.” They know, and are not afraid. Their struggle is your struggle. They hold in disdain those who claim to support them but not the cause that takes their innocence, their limbs, and even their lives. As a democracy—“We the People”—and that by definition is every one of us—sent them away from home and hearth to fight our enemies. We are all responsible.  I know it doesn’t apply to those of us here tonight but if anyone thinks you can somehow thank them for their service, and not support the cause for which they fight—America’s survival—then they are lying to themselves and rationalizing away something in their lives, but, more importantly, they are slighting our warriors and mocking their commitment to the nation.
Read the whole thing to the end.

You will weep.

President Obama versus The Constitution of the United States of America

President Obama is openly violating the Constitution, and arrogantly ignoring the precedent set by his own party during President Bush's 8 years in office, by appointing 4 officials to a pair of minor Federal agencies

We are in the election year.  It's past time to boot Obama out of the White House, regardless who is running as the GOP candidate.

George Washington writes a letter to President Obama

This was penned by a close friend of mine, who is a principled conservative and a superb writer.  A short snip:
Dear Mr. President:

Although it is two hundred years, and more, since I laid down the cares of an eventful temporal existence and took up residence in my long home, Our Gracious Lord has seen fit to bestow upon my spirit the gift of perpetual cognition, and He has granted the further boon of permitting me, for a few moments, to assume sufficient corporeality to pen this letter, which I place before Your Excellency as the cri de coeur of a patriot whose efforts on behalf of his country have been deemed by its citizens to possess no little significance.
